St. Mary of the Assumption | Expansion and Restoration
String Prairie, Texas
Quietly hidden a mile off of highway 304 between Bastrop and Gonzales and identified only by a small sign for St. Mary's Church Rd, St. Mary of the Assumption in String Prairie, TX is a 140 years old as a Catholic community. Built in 1901, the church stands as a reminder of the area's strong German Catholic heritage. The original steeple was damaged in a storm and removed some years after it was built. Other additions and modifications have been made to accommodate growth that have detracted from the building's original beauty. Still thriving and now more vibrant than ever, the parish is interested in an expansion that will increase the church's seating capacity, update the interior and building systems, rebuild the choir loft and narthex, improve egress and safety, provide more generous facilities in the rear apse, and restore the original historic façade.
