Regents School of Austin | Athletics
The design challenge presented by Regents was formidable: “Establish a campus-wide design aesthetic for the present and future with a gymnasium as an initial building; plus, we need to play basketball in the gym in six months.” JGA quickly designed and ordered the steel frame before the remaining design was finished. We then turned our attention to develop a motif that would tie all the future facilities together. The result of that process was a selection of Texas stone arcades expressed in leapfrogging arches.
In addition to housing the basketball, volleyball, and theater programs, the gymnasium remains heavily used in a multifunction capacity. With its now trademark interlaced arches, it remains a focal building at the center of campus.
A few years after the gym's completion, Regents asked JGA to master plan the remaining athletics facilities, including a new football stadium, field house, and baseball and softball fields which will be completed in the future.
