Final Presentation: Architecture in Schools Program

posted by Michael Raia

This fall semester sure has flown by. Our JGA staff have been teaching an 8-week course on architecture to a 5th grade STEAM class (Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math) at UT Elementary School in East Austin. The course includes a project that the students collaborate to complete: a plan and model of a town / neighborhood.

Typically the students travel to UT or to an architecture firm to pair their presentation with a field trip, but this year transportation limitations meant that we brought JGA's office to the classroom. Five JGA staff were present to review the students' presentation, which was followed by a discussion of what architects do on a daily basis. This included viewing video renderings of projects in design, actual construction drawing sets, and live feed shots from on-site construction cameras.

The students were excited and engaged, and the architects really appreciated the chance to share our passion and knowledge with the students. We are grateful to UT Elementary School and AIA Austin for the opportunity to serve.
