Timy Baranoff Elementary School | Austin ISD
Baranoff Elementary School was one of several facilities constructed by the Austin Independent School District with prototype components. We worked in joint venture with LZT Architects, Inc to adapt the various school components to the unique characteristics of the site. The high clay content of the soil necessitated the school building to be constructed on deep drilled piers. However, these same soil conditions also made it possible to utilize ground-source heat pumps for energy-saving air conditioning.
An existing livestock pond was accessed by a new walking trail and incorporated into the campus as a science/learning feature. Shade structures on the exterior respond to the solar conditions by shading lower windows and reflecting light onto the classroom ceilings for natural, energy-efficient lighting.
